Obituaries

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret “Ann” Toplak of Manilla, Ontario, on October 3rd, 2026. Ann passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. Born December 6th, 1940, Ann was the daughter of Edward Ross Woodyard and Elsie Isabel Underwood and is survived by her brother, Edward Woodyard. She spent her youth in Orono, Ontario where she enjoyed track and field and racing her friends down the road. Ann attended St. Joseph's Hospital and the University of Western Ontario, earning her nursing degree and becoming a Registered Nurse. Her career took her to Sarnia, New York City, and eventually Oshawa, where she spent many years working at Hillsdale Manor. Ann will be lovingly remembered by her son, Jon Toplak, grandchildren Brooklyn and Calvin, and close friend Mervin Procope. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Toplak, in 2012. Ann enjoyed painting, rug hooking, gardening, baking, reading, and collecting antiques. She was a dedicated volunteer, particularly with the Manilla Library and Town Hall, and was recognized by the Durham Region for her community service. She was a member of Manilla United Church and later Crestwell Church. Kind, loyal, and always willing to help, Ann was never afraid to try something new. She was a wonderful friend and always made time for the people she cared about. Jon will fondly remember her little reminders, including her insistence that he never put his glass too close to the edge of the table. Ann leaves behind many cherished memories and will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and community. Visitation took place at the Stoddart Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 13th from 2:00pm until 4:00pm, with a service at 4:00pm.
