When you drive down Adelaide Street in Lindsay, one house might catch your eye this Halloween.

On Tonya Ferguson’s lawn, a large skeleton sits behind a cemetery with tombstones that read “sleep forever” and “six feet under.” On the other side of the lawn, is a giant cobweb with spiders crawling all over it, and by the door is a flying phantom.

“My dad used to be huge on Halloween,” Ferguson said. When he died 10 years ago, she wanted to carry on the tradition.

“It keeps growing year after year,” Ferguson said. What started as handmade tombstones, has grown into a larger spectacle, with at least one new item added every year to her collection.

Looking around the neighbourhood Halloween decorations are few and far between. For Ferguson, she loves the holiday. “I feel like times have changed so much since I was a kid. It’s that one time of a year where you can go out and dress up and have fun.”

Ferguson also enjoys having a house that makes people stop. “We’ll have families that will drive by, or my neighbours across the street, they’ll come over and take pictures.”

While she’s disappointed that not too many people decorate for Halloween, Ferguson has no plans of stopping and will continue to grow her collection next year. “Being adults now, we don’t get an opportunity to just dress up, go out, and have a good night. I think (decorating) keeps the spirit alive.”
